What a boat wrap is
The film goes on the hull sides of a fiberglass boat, or on the aluminum fence of a pontoon. It stays above the waterline: a Chicago shop ends its hull wraps above the waterline with a sealed edge and leaves the antifouling paint on the bottom Chicago Fleet Wraps, 2026, and a boat graphics shop says to avoid wrapping below it unless the film is rated for continuous submersion IPD Boat Graphics, August 2026. A wrap follows the surface beneath it and does not hide an unstable one Ocean Wraps, 2026 guide, so oxidation, old graphics and loose rivets are dealt with first IPD Boat Graphics, September 2026 IPD Boat Graphics, August 2026.
For a solid color, members of a sign trade forum recommend vinyl such as 3M 1080 or 2080 Signs101 forum, February 2024. A Chicago shop says it uses only 3M IJ180-CV3 or Avery MPI 1105, under a laminate Chicago Fleet Wraps, 2026.
Which boats get wrapped
- Pontoons. The fence panels and gates along both sides. No shop we found prices the logs alone. More in the pontoon boat wrap guide.
- Bowriders. The hull, or the hull with the deck and accents IPD Boat Graphics, September 2026.
- Center consoles and fishing boats. One wrap shop prices them with cruisers in its 20 to 30 foot band Ocean Wraps, 2026 guide.
- Bass boats. A Chicago shop prices a 20 foot bass boat the same as a 20 foot pontoon Chicago Fleet Wraps, 2026.
- Personal watercraft. An Australian shop lists a jet ski at $800 to $1,500, with no currency given Omega Graphix, November 2025. No US shop we found publishes a price.

How long a boat wrap lasts
Most shops and guides say 5 to 7 years for a wrap that is professionally specified and installed Ocean Wraps, 2026 guide IPD Boat Graphics, September 2026 Chicago Fleet Wraps, 2026. A film seller gives a pontoon wrap 3 to 5 years YesWrap, August 2025. A fishing magazine says that even in the best conditions a wrap will probably last only seven years, and in the Sunbelt, on a boat left uncovered, it might only be two Salt Water Sportsman, October 2023. A boat graphics shop gives calendered film 2 to 4 years IPD Boat Graphics, August 2026. None of these figures comes from an independent test.
Wrap or paint
A film seller says painting a boat often starts at $4,000 to $6,000 for smaller boats, and that a wrap can cost as little as a third of that YesWrap, August 2025. The same seller quotes one to two days at the shop to wrap a pontoon YesWrap, August 2025. Either way the surface has to be sound: a wrap follows the surface beneath it Ocean Wraps, 2026 guide.
Care
Wash with mild soap and water, and keep pressure washers away from the edges and seams IPD Boat Graphics, August 2026 YesWrap, August 2025. Check the edges now and then, and keep the boat covered and out of the sun when you can. Skip traditional wax: a boat seller says to use a sealant or protectant made for wraps instead Novielli Yachts, January 2025, and a Chicago shop suggests a marine wax or sealant made for vinyl Chicago Fleet Wraps, 2026.
Doing it yourself
A fishing magazine says doing it yourself can save about half the cost Salt Water Sportsman, October 2023. For pontoons, printed side kits, one piece per side, cost $799.99 and $829 for a 22 foot fence 24 inches tall PickandStick DaVinci Wrap Masters, and stripe kits about $100 Chicago Pontoon Parts FenceForPontoons PontoonStuff. The cost guide lists more kits.
Try it in 3D
