Ceramic vs carbon vs dyed tint cost

Ceramic tint costs more than carbon or dyed film. On a sedan’s side and rear windows, the median published price is $295 for dyed, $300 for carbon, $425 for ceramic and $599 for IR ceramic. That puts ceramic $125 above carbon, and IR ceramic $174 above ceramic. On an SUV the step from carbon to ceramic is $171.

Few shops list dyed film: only 5 of the 51 publish a sedan price for it, and where they do it isn’t always cheaper. Its median is $295 against $300 for carbon on a sedan, and $399 against $329 on an SUV. Ceramic is the film most shops price, 38 for a sedan’s side and rear windows against 20 for carbon. IR ceramic here means a film sold as infrared-rejecting or a maker’s top ceramic line.

At the same shop

Medians across shops mix cheap shops with expensive ones. Inside one shop the step is easier to read: 15 shops publish both a carbon and a ceramic price for a sedan’s side and rear windows, and their ceramic is typically $100 to $151 more than their own carbon (median $100; the steps run from the same price to $300). Going from their ceramic to their IR ceramic typically adds $100 to $220 (median $200, 15 shops). On an SUV, ceramic over carbon is a median $150 at the 8 shops that list both. Each step uses the shop’s lowest listed price for each film.

Ceramic tint vs regular tint

No shop here sells a film called regular or normal tint. If “regular” means a shop’s dyed or carbon film, ceramic on a sedan’s side and rear windows costs $130 more than dyed and $125 more than carbon at the median, or a median $100 more than carbon at the same shop. Ask which film the cheaper price is: a shop’s base package can be dyed or carbon.

Nano ceramic tint

Nano ceramic is a name makers and shops give ceramic film, and shops use it two ways. 9 of the 51 shops name a film nano ceramic on their price list: 6 use the name for their standard ceramic film and 3 for a premium tier above it. Their prices for that film on a sedan’s side and rear windows run from $249 to $599 (8 shops), against a typical $340 – $460 for any ceramic. So a nano ceramic quote can be a shop’s standard film or its best one: ask for the maker and the film line, and compare the warranty.

What the extra money buys

AAA says dyed film gives privacy and a dark look but minimal heat and UV protection, and can fade. It calls carbon a durable mid-range film with excellent UV protection that won’t fade like dyed film, and ceramic a premium film with superior heat and UV protection without being overly dark, ideal for hot, sunny climates. If a cooler cabin is why you’re tinting, AAA’s description points to ceramic; if heat isn’t the concern, carbon costs $125 less at the median on a sedan. How dark the window looks is the shade you choose, and most shops charge the same for every shade of one film.

Windshield tint cost

Film over the whole windshield typically costs $180 – $275 in ceramic (23 shops, median $225). Carbon typically runs $110 – $229 (9 shops) and IR ceramic $250 – $350 (12 shops). A strip across the top of the windshield, also called a visor or eyebrow, costs less: typically $69 – $100 in ceramic (7 shops) and $50 – $99 in carbon (6 shops).

Most shops price windshield film in ceramic: of the 28 shops that list a full-windshield price, 23 list ceramic and 9 carbon. Some describe it as a clear or near-clear film (Precision Tintz, Exclusive Paint Protection). Most list one windshield price for every vehicle, and a few charge more for bigger glass: SB Mobile Detailing asks $299 on a sedan and $399 on a truck, and All Florida Tinting Co. $285 on a sedan and $340 on an SUV. With the side and rear windows too, a sedan in ceramic typically costs $598 – $735 (23 shops). Tint laws differ by state; check your state’s DMV or state police.

Window tint installation: how long it takes

Four of the seven shops here that publish a time for a car’s side and rear windows say about 2 to 3 hours: about 2 hours at The Tint Guy, and 2 to 3 hours at Auto Cosmetics, Tint Atlanta and Precision Tintz. Exclusive Paint Protection says 2 to 4 hours for most vehicles, Golden State Glass & Tint 3.5 to 4 hours and Tint Galaxy 45 minutes to an hour. EMWRAPS says an installation takes 1.5 to 3 hours. The front two windows alone take about an hour at The Tint Guy, and a windshield adds about another hour at Auto Cosmetics.

Bigger glass and old film take longer. Tint Atlanta says SUVs and trucks may take 3 to 4 hours, and All Florida Tinting Co. lists up to 3 hours 15 minutes for a large SUV or van. If old film has to come off first, The Tint Guy says to plan on about 4 hours in all.

After the install

Keep the windows rolled up while the film cures. AAA says at least 3 to 5 days, and Auto Tint Express and Tint Atlanta say 3 to 5; Auto Cosmetics says at least 3 days and Pro Tint Utah at least two. Ask your shop how long for its film and your weather.

The prices on this page are what shops charge to tint the car, film and labor together. To compare quotes, type yours into the calculator, or ask a local shop for a quote.

What changes the price

Film type

The film is the biggest step in the price: see ceramic vs carbon vs dyed above. Most shops charge the same for every shade of one film; Tennessee Window Tint Co. is an exception and charges $10–$20 more for each darker step.

Brand and warranty

Within one film type, the brand moves the price. Dick Hannah Auto Detail charges $379 for XPEL CS and $799 for XPEL XR Plus on the same sedan; Austin Sunshades charges $599 for 3M Ceramic IR and $799 for 3M Crystalline. Warranties follow the price: carbon film comes with 3 years at SB Mobile Detailing and Greenfield Auto Spa and 5 years at Detroit Tint Co., while most ceramics carry a lifetime warranty.

Removing old film

Old, bubbled or purple film has to come off first. 6 of the shops publish a price for taking it off a whole car on its own, from $100 to $490: Trimline Window Tinting charges $150, and All Florida Tinting Co. $225 for a single-cab truck up to $490 for a large SUV or van. The Tint Guy takes 20% off removal when it re-tints the car.

Curved and complex glass

No shop here lists curved rear glass as its own charge; it shows up in the price instead. AOA Detailing tints a rear window from $125 and asks $145 or more for large or complex rear glass. Neighborhood Window Tinting (directory listing) adds $150 for the full rear window of a Tesla Model 3, and All Florida Tinting Co. adds $50 for an intricate windshield.

Vehicle size

More glass costs more. In ceramic film, side and rear windows have a median of $410 on a coupe, $425 on a sedan, $500 on an SUV and $545 on a minivan.

From shop to shop

Prices vary widely between shops. The same job, ceramic film on a sedan’s side and rear windows, is published at $199 by Crown Tints in Miami, FL and at $895 by 503 Motoring in Beaverton, OR. Get two or three quotes from shops near you.

See the shade before you pay

The price follows the film, but the shade is what you’ll live with. Try 5% to 70% on a 3D car in the window tint simulator, compare every shade side by side on the tint percentage chart, or work out what film and glass add up to with the window tint calculator. When you’ve chosen, ask a local shop for a quote.

How these prices are made

WrapColor read the price lists that 51 tint shops in 34 US metros publish online, from Los Angeles, Seattle and Phoenix to Houston, Miami, Chicago, Philadelphia and Worcester, Massachusetts, and recorded each price with its page and the date it was checked. All but one are the shops’ own websites; one is a directory listing of a shop’s prices. This is a sample of shops that post prices, not a survey of every shop. Nothing is estimated: a range is the middle half of those published prices and the median is the middle one, so every number shown is a price some shop publishes, rounded to the nearest dollar, or for a full car at a shop that prices the windshield separately, the sum of its two prices. “From” and “starting at” prices count as published, so real quotes for large or luxury cars run higher.

A shop’s film is placed by what its page calls it. IR ceramic means a ceramic film sold as infrared-rejecting (3M Ceramic IR, SunTek CIR) or a maker’s or shop’s top ceramic (XPEL XR Plus, 3M Crystalline, SunTek Evolve, LLumar Stratos). Where a shop prices the side and rear windows and the windshield separately, its full-car price is the two added together. Prices from pages that don’t say which windows or which film they cover are left out.

For comparison, Yelp puts the average tint job at $195 from 463,691 quotes, a figure that includes small jobs such as one window or a strip, and AAA puts ceramic film at $400–$800.

Is ceramic tint worth it over carbon?

On a sedan’s side and rear windows, the median ceramic price is $125 above carbon ($425 against $300, from 51 shop price lists in 34 US metros, checked October 17, 2026). AAA describes ceramic as a premium film with superior heat and UV protection without being overly dark, ideal for hot, sunny climates, and carbon as a durable mid-range film that won’t fade like dyed film. If a cooler cabin is why you’re tinting, AAA’s description points to ceramic; if heat isn’t the concern, carbon costs less. How dark the window looks is the shade you choose, not the film type.

How much more does a shop charge for ceramic tint than carbon?

At the same shop, a median of $100 more on a sedan’s side and rear windows. In 51 shop price lists in 34 US metros, checked October 17, 2026, 15 shops publish both films for that job, and their ceramic price is typically $100 to $151 above their own carbon price (median $100, each shop’s lowest listed price for each film). Their IR ceramic is typically $100 to $220 above their ceramic (median $200, 15 shops).

What is the difference between ceramic tint and regular tint?

Price and heat. If “regular” means dyed or carbon film, ceramic on a sedan’s side and rear windows costs $130 more than dyed and $125 more than carbon at the median (51 shop price lists in 34 US metros, checked October 17, 2026). AAA calls ceramic a premium film with superior heat and UV protection without being overly dark, carbon a durable mid-range film with excellent UV protection, and dyed film a dark look with minimal heat and UV protection that can fade.

Is nano ceramic tint better than ceramic tint?

Not by its name alone. Nano ceramic is a name makers and shops give ceramic film: of 51 shop price lists, 9 name a film nano ceramic, 6 for their standard ceramic and 3 for a premium tier above it. Ask for the maker and film line, its heat rejection and the warranty, and compare those.

How long does it take to tint car windows?

About 2 to 3 hours for a car’s side and rear windows at four of the seven shops here that publish a time for it; the others say from 45 minutes to 4 hours. Adding the windshield, a large SUV or van, or removing old film first takes longer.

How long after tinting can I roll my windows down?

AAA says to keep them rolled up for at least 3 to 5 days so the adhesive can cure. Shops that publish a time say 2 to 5 days; ask yours for its film.

How much does windshield tint cost?

In 51 shop price lists in 34 US metros, checked October 17, 2026, film over the whole windshield of a car typically costs $180 to $275 in ceramic (23 shops, median $225), $110 to $229 in carbon (9 shops) and $250 to $350 in IR ceramic (12 shops). A strip across the top of the windshield typically costs $69 to $100 in ceramic (7 shops). A few shops charge more for a truck or large SUV windshield. Tint laws differ by state; check your state’s DMV or state police.

Is my window tint quote a fair price?

Compare it with what shops publish for the same job. A sedan’s side and rear windows in ceramic film typically cost $340 to $460, and the published prices run from $199 to $895. Type your quote into “Check a quote you got” above to see where it falls for your vehicle, windows and film. A higher quote is often a premium film line or a longer warranty, so ask which film it is, what the warranty covers and whether old film removal and fees are included.

How much is it to tint back windows?

Few shops price the back windows on their own. Many SUVs, pickups and minivans already have dark factory glass in the back, so owners often tint only the front two windows to match: typically $160 to $240 in ceramic film. Shops that tint the rear window alone list it at $80 to $300.

Is 30% tint worth it?

It depends on how dark you want the car and what your state allows. 30% film lets through about 30% of the visible light, between 35% and 20%. Most shops charge the same for every shade of a film, so the shade rarely changes the price; the film type does. Compare 35% and 20% in the 3D simulator from the driver’s seat, by day and at night, before you choose.

How long does window tinting last?

The shop’s warranty is the best guide. On the price lists here, carbon film comes with 3 to 5 years at some shops and a lifetime warranty at others, and most ceramic and IR ceramic films come with a lifetime warranty (one shop gives 10 years). Ask whether the warranty is the shop’s, the film maker’s or both, and whether it covers fading, bubbling and peeling.

Is 35% or 20% tint darker?

20% is darker. The number is how much visible light the film lets through, so 20% film lets through less light than 35% film. On real glass the window ends up a little darker than the film’s number, because the glass blocks some light too.

Does removing old tint cost extra?

Usually. 6 of the shops publish a price to strip old film from a whole car on its own: $100 to $490, more for large vehicles and old, baked-on film. Some discount it or include it when they re-tint the car.

Is my tint legal?

Tint laws differ by state; check your state’s DMV or state police.
