Window tint calculator

Enter the film’s VLT and the glass’s VLT to see how much light the finished window lets through: film % × glass % ÷ 100. Or enter the result you want and see which film gets you there. It runs in your browser.

How the math works

Each layer lets through a share of the light that reaches it, so the shares multiply. 35% film on 80% glass: 35 × 80 ÷ 100 = 28%. Two films stack the same way: 50% over 50% is 25%.

Meters have a small tolerance, and glass differs between models and years, so treat the result as an estimate and ask your installer what the finished window will meter.

Numbers are hard to picture. The window tint simulator shows each shade on a 3D car from outside and from the driver’s seat, and the tint percentage chart shows them side by side. For prices, the window tint cost calculator gives the typical cost by vehicle, windows and film.

Questions

How do you calculate tint percentage?

Multiply the glass’s VLT by the film’s VLT and divide by 100. 35% film on 80% glass: 35 × 80 ÷ 100 = 28%.

What does VLT mean?

VLT, visible light transmission, is the share of visible light a window lets through. A 20% film lets through about a fifth of the light; a 70% film lets through most of it.

Why does my window meter darker than the film?

Because the glass under the film blocks some light too. The finished window is always darker than the film’s number.

Does this tell me if my tint is legal?

No. It does the math only. Tint laws differ by state; check your state’s DMV or state police.
